When Kevin Durant fell to the ground with an injury during Game 5 of the NBA Finals, everyone feared the worst.
Well all of those fears were proven accurate, as Kevin Durant announced today that he had surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon.
Luckily his surgery was a success, but Durant will now have to go through the lengthy process of rehabbing from that serious injury.
While he is in the midst of rehabbing, Durant has a big decision on his hand as he was set to become an unrestricted free agent.
Durant could still opt-in to his $31 million player option and remain with the Golden State Warriors to rehab for next season.
Despite the fact that Durant will likely miss most, if not all, of next season, there are still teams like the New York Knicks that would jump to sign him to a long-term max deal.
There is still the matter of the NBA Finals to decide, before NBA free agency will go until full swing, but the basketball world was really flipped on its head by Durant getting injured.
Once July 1st comes around and free agency opens up, everyone will be anxiously awaiting to see where Durant lands.
Kyle Kuzma Showing Why He Was the One Young Player to Stay in L.A.
When the Los Angeles Lakers made their blockbuster trade for Anthony Davis this summer, they essentially traded their entire young core to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart were all sent to the Pelicans, along with three first-round picks to acquire Davis’ services. Yet there was one young player that remained on the Lakers roster. Kyle Kuzma.
Kuzma was the one player the Lakers refused to part with, as they felt keeping the 24-year-old forward was essential to their success.
While injuries derailed the start of Kuzma’s season, he is beginning to show why the Lakers were so hesitant to move him in that trade.
Playing against the Phoenix Suns on the road, Kuzma poured in 23 points on Tuesday night.
Kuzma got off to a fast start for the Lakers, scoring 13 points in the game’s first period, despite coming off the bench.
Kuzma later made a huge impact in the fourth quarter, scoring eight huge points for the Lakers.
Late in the fourth quarter it was Kuzma that iced the game, draining a pair of clutch threes to seal the victory for Los Angeles.
The Lakers really could not have started this season any better, as this victory takes them to an 8-2 record through their first 10 games.
Anthony Davis and LeBron James may be the league’s best duo, but they are going to need role players like Kuzma to step up in the big moments if they are going to reach their ultimate goals of a championship.
Another critical role player for the Lakers is Rajon Rondo, who made his season debut for the Lakers on Tuesday night, dishing seven assists off the bench.
With Rondo, Kuzma and Dwight Howard all giving them serious contributions off the bench, the Lakers are starting to look like a really formidable title contender in the West.
Trae Young Leads Hawks Past Nuggets with Season-High 42-Point Night
The Atlanta Hawks came into Tuesday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets in desperate need for a win, after dropping five of their last six contests.
Traveling to Denver and winning on the road is no small feat, but tonight was one of those nights in which Trae Young put his team on his back and led them to the promise land.
Young scorched the Nuggets with 42 points, flashing his incredible handle and shooting ability, all while keeping his teammates involved with 11 assists.
Putting up a 40-point double-double is no small feat, as many players go their entire careers without putting together that stat-line in a game.
Yet at just 21 years old, Young has now accomplished that feat twice in his career and has joined some elite company in doing so.
Young is showing no signs of a sophomore slump, as he is scoring at an elite level in his second season since taking over as the Hawks’ point guard.
Through nine games, Young is averaging 28 points and 8.7 assists per game, all while shooting 40% from three-point range.
Young has already eclipsed 30 points in five games this season and has only failed to reach at least 25 points twice.
Anyone who saw the small 6’2″ guard play at Oklahoma and thought his game wouldn’t translate to the NBA has been sorely mistaken, as Trae Young has taken the league by storm.
Rookie Coby White Puts Together Historic Night in Bulls Win Over the Knicks
Coby White is part of an exciting rookie class in the NBA this year, with great young players making an impact all over the league.
White was the No. 7 overall pick in the draft, selected by the Chicago Bulls for his ability to make plays and shoot at an elite level.
All of those skills were on display on Tuesday night, as White put on a show against fellow rookie R.J. Barrett and the New York Knicks.
White scored 27 points on the night, with 24 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. The Bulls really pulled away from the Knicks behind White’s hot shooting in the fourth.
White drained five-straight threes at one point and made seven of his eight three-point attempts in the final period.
White had a little extra motivation coming into this game, with his college coach Roy Williams in attendance. Williams is a basketball legend, having been the head coach at the University of North Carolina since 2003.
Even at 69 years old, Williams connects so well with his young players. As evidence by White’s regards towards him after the game.
Regardless of whether Williams is in attendance or not, White has proven that he can be a real impact player for the Bulls moving forward.
While inconsistency has plagued White so far this season, he is still just 19 years old and will have plenty of growing pains to endure at the early stages of his career.
Still, making seven threes in a quarter is not an easy feat to accomplish and that spotlights the potential that White has to become an elite scorer in this league for years to come.
