Sam Darnold Cleared to Play This Week After Missing Last Three Games With Mono

The New York Jets may finally get their first win of the season this week, as it has been announced that Sam Darnold will start on Sunday.

Darnold has been absent from the starting lineup for the last three weeks, after suffering from a bout of mono. While the mono was what initially kept Darnold off the field, it was his enlarged spleen that kept him from playing last week.

The second-year quarterback had recovered enough to get back on the practice field last week, but as a result of the mono, his spleen was too susceptible to rupture to be cleared to play.

Now it seems like the spleen is no longer an issue, as the Jets announced on Tuesday that Darnold would suit up and play this week.

There is no question that Darnold give the Jets a better chance to win. In his lone game this season, New York lost by one point in the season opener to the Buffalo Bills.

In the three weeks since, the Jets have lost by 16 points or more in each contest.

Darnold allows their offense to reach its full potential, taking a lot of pressure off of LeVeon Bell to do everything himself.

The Jets will be playing the Dallas Cowboys this week, who just suffered a pair of embarrassing loses to the Drew Brees-less New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers in consecutive weeks.

Dallas is still favored in this game, but Darnold’s presence means the Cowboys will have to work to pick up this much-needed victory.

Everson Griffen Opts Out of Contract with the Minnesota Viking to Become Free Agent

Over the past decade there has been few pass rushers more dynamic than Everson Griffen.

Griffen was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft and has since turned into a four-time Pro Bowler.

Now he is set to maybe wear another jersey for the first time in his career, as Griffen has opted out of his contract with the Vikings.

Through 10 seasons in Minnesota, Griffen has 74.5 sacks, 176 quarterback hits, 86 tackles for a loss and 355 total tackles.

There have been few players in the league that are harder to block than Griffen and he now gets the chance to test free agency.

After voiding his lucrative $13.5 million salary for next season, Griffen is likely looking to sign a contract of similar value through free agency.

At 32 years old, Griffen could be looking for a three-year contract worth somewhere around $45 million.

NFL May Change Playoff Structure to Seven Teams Per Conference

Just last week it was reported that Major League Baseball was considering a change to their playoff format that would expand it from 10 teams to 14 that make the postseason each year.

Turns out the NFL is thinking about making a similar change, taking what is already a pool of 12 teams and adding two more.

Under the current playoff format, the top two seeds from each conference get a bye, while the two Wild Card teams play the two other division winners in the Wild Card round.

If this new rule is passed under the collective bargaining agreement, then only the top seed in the conference gets a bye, while another Wild Card team will be added.

The changes to the schedule don’t stop there when it comes to the proposed CBA, as a 17-game season could come into effect as well.

Really what all of this indicates is just how much money the owners make off of these televised games.

Adding another regular season game, in the place of a meaningless preseason game, will generate a ton of revenue in of itself.

Then you bring in two more lucrative playoff games to their postseason schedule and everyone comes away with a lot more money.

While most fans are not going to like these changes on the surface, those are going to be the same people that tune in to watch the NFL during the new Week 18 and for every Wild Card game under the new playoff format.

In the end, this new season structure makes too much financial sense for all the parties with a vested interest to not happen.

Cleveland Browns Offensive Lineman Arrested at the Border, Facing Federal Marijuana Charges

Greg Robinson was once one of the best college football players in the nation, so highly touted that he actually was drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The St. Louis Rams drafted Robinson to be their left tackle of the future, but that experiment never quite worked out. Robinson has since played for the Detroit Lions and most recently the Cleveland Browns.

Now it appears his NFL career is in jeopardy, as Robinson is facing federal charges after being arrested at the border for trafficking marijuana.

TMZ reported that Robinson was stopped on Monday at the Sierra Blanca border checkpoint near the U.S., Mexico border.

It was at that checkpoint that it was discovered that he had a large amount of marijuana. Robinson was then taken into custody and is facing federal charges for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

While this will clearly put his NFL career on hold, the Browns must have already suspected his off-field troubles.

They had previously come to the decision that they were going to move on from the free agent prior to learning this news.

Robinson played 31 games for the Browns over the last two seasons and started in 22.

Last season, Robinson started 14 games for Cleveland and was given a solid 66.9 grade from Pro Football Focus for his play.

Despite being a quality offensive tackle in the NFL, Robinson’s once-promising career may be over at 27 years old.
